mirror

November 28th, 2010

I finished the mirror today.  It turned out awesome, despite my pictures. Never mind all the crap reflected in the mirror, right now, its the spare bedroom that is also our “catch all” room.  I’m in the process of cleaning/organizing it all.  I promise 🙂  Also, the pictures don’t really do it justice.  The room […]

Thank you West End Salvage in Des Moines, IA for the idea.

We survived Black Friday.

Part of it was a scam!  I saw this ad in my email.

According to their website, the Colorado Mills outlet store was participating in the midnight sale.

Matt & I got to the mall at 11:45pm and waited outside for it to open at midnight.  Only to have a Security Gaurd inform us at 12:10am that the mall wouldn’t open until 4:00 am.  Seriously…Banana Republic, you lied, we could have gotten a full 5 hours of sleep instead of 3.  We drove back home & went to bed until 3:30am and got up to head to Target.

We didn’t need any door busters at Target so we just waited for the .5 mile long line to shuffle in.  When they opened the doors, it was just like on TV.  People running, elbowing, trampling people.  Right before the doors opened, a punk kid tried to cut in line, and I thought this mom was going to punch him.  It was comical.  All in all, we got what we wanted and NEEDED.

After that, we went back to Banana Republic Factory store, which was then open, & took advantage of the 50% off sale.  We got 2 gifts, a sweatshirt for me, and a polo for Matt, all for $60.  Yay!

Our last stop!  Bed Bath & Beyond.  It was pretty boring there, but again, we were able to get the golf bag storage thing we needed.

Matt suggested that we go next door to Ultimate Electronics because we had some spare time before our favorite breakfast place opened a 6:00 am.  We found BethAnn & Dave a wireless printer for a killer price.  I hope she didn’t mind me calling her at 6:15am WI time asking if they wanted it 🙂

Last weekend I went to IA to visit my BFF Susan.  We had a BLAST.  She lives about an hour SW of Des Moines in a small town called Creston.  I expected it to be tiny, but its probably 6000 people AND has a Wal-Mart.  They affectionately call it the Wal-Mart the “shopping mall”.  It also have 5 of these:

Susan & her boyfriend have a wonderfully delightful house.  I’m so impressed with all the hard work they’ve put into it.  It looks fabulous!  In the spare bedroom is a TINY little bathroom, and it has RED VELVET on the walls.  Seriously, I told Susan if she gets rid of it, I’m no longer her friend.  I LOVE it.  Sure, its kind of ugly, but so ugly its awesome.  It adds character.  See for yourself.

Friday, Susan worked, so I stayed around the house.  I also drove around Creston & took some pictures.  Its pretty cute.  That night we went to Des Moines & watched the Christmas Tree lighting at Jordan Creek shopping center.  It was anti climatic, but fun all at the same time.  That was followed by dinner at the Cheesecake Factory – yum!

Saturday we spent the day in Des Moines again.  We went to this store, downtown Des Moines, called West End Architectural & Salvage.  LOVED IT.  So many awesome country crafty stuff, to bad it was expensive.  I stole some one of their ideas & am creating a mirror…updates on that project to come!

Sunday we bummed around her house & baked Christmas cookies.  I love Christmas, so does Susan.  Some might call us Christmas Freaks, but judge as you will, we don’t care.

Thanks for a great time & the hospitality Susan & Matt.

More pictures of Creston, IA.

Not to worry….a post is to come, but probably Monday.  I’m in Creston, IA.  I’m shocked they have electricity, let alone internet.  Fascinating.

Now that I have a lot of extra free time, Matt & I have compiled a “honey do” list.  I’m doing AWESOME on it.  One of the items was to paint the window sill in the tub, it never got re painted after we re did the bathroom A YEAR AND A HALF AGO.  Geesh.  So then I got to thinking…we never painted behind the washing machine & water heater when I moved in.  We always said we’d do it when we got a new washer.  We got a new washer a little under TWO YEARS AGO.  Geesh…again.  I told Matt at 2:00 yesterday afternoon that since I have the paint out & the supplies out, I might as well just do it.  And he said “relax, we can always do it later”.  Relax…does he know who he married?  Not to mention, I did so much relaxing in the couch last night between 6-9:30, I almost went postal due to boredom.  Anyways…

Lets be honest…90% of the laundry room is painted a nice clean off white, and then the smaller area behind the washer & water heater are this ugly orange (I forgot to take before pictures…and I know I have some someplace, but the wash basin is the same color the orange wall was…so you get the point).

Anyways, he decided to just let me do my thing & moved the washer.  And although, I admit, it looks a lot nicer, more uniform, and CLEANER (the uncleanliness of the walls in this house before paint is a whole ‘nother post), I miss the orange.  the orange added pizzazz & as mom pointed out, it was unexpected.

**NOTE: Disregard the old nasty electrical outlet.  That will be changed into a nice new clean/fresh white one once I’m done with the post.  I just have to go out back in the cold & snow to shut off the electricity to the house.  Oh…how Matt loves having a capable woman in this house 🙂

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to paint behind the water heater.  That just seemed to complicated, and who wants to take a water heater out?   So its still orange behind it.  I’ll just consider that my little extra flair in the laundry room.  A little hidden surprise and reminder of how far this house come.

**NOTE:  Disregard the dog biscuits….they don’t usually find their way on top of the laundry room, but today they did 🙂  Also, I apologize for the poor quality of the pictures, but seriously, my laundry room has THE WORST lighting EVER.

Next on the Honey Do list is to go through the filing cabinet.  WOOHOO!!

And now…for a totally different Oprah:
I’m fed up with the hippie movement.  Matt & I were in the grocery store parking lot Tuesday afternoon when we walked past this hippie looking woman getting into her HUGE SUV with a bike attached to the back.  The bike had a basket on the front decorated in fake flowers (I kind of dug it).  The part that killed me, is there was a huge sticker on her hippie bike that said “on less car”.  Seriously…if you’re not hippie enough to ride your bike in the cold, rain, & snow, then don’t put that sticker on your bike.  You’re either all in, or not in at all.  Or, AT LEAST, don’t drive a huge SUV, drive something a little more environmentally friendly, like a metro.  Save the huge SUV for non environmentalist like me.  Just sayin’……

As few of you know,  I lost my job this week.  It was hard…I related it to breaking up with a guy after a 5 year relationship.  Even though it had recently gotten boring, it was still hard to say goodbye.  Fortunately, there are great things on the horizon.  This was something Matt & I had been discussing, but I wasn’t ready to leave my company.  Although, management was not what I wanted it to be, I loved my boss, I loved my work, & I loved the people I worked with.  However, I can find those love’s again…I’m sure.  I’m convinced this was God’s plan.  It was his little push for me to move on, because we all know, it was probably time for me to move on, I just couldn’t do it myself.  God also had great timing on this as Matt’s business is becoming successful (yay!).

I’m hoping I don’t die from boredom between sending out resumes.  I only have 3 “to-do’s”.  Fix bathtub drain (hello Plumber Catie), paint window around tub, & organize/clean out the file cabinet.  I’m hoping to get quite a bit of sewing done too.  I was just wondering when I’d finish the blanket I’m making for my cousin’s little girl.  Now I know when 🙂

In the mean time, I’m staying positive, because there are jobs out there, thankfully.  If not, you’ll find me working at The Gap…

We had a busy weekend, but not a terribly exciting one.  Friday, I took my PE Exam.  Its done…that’s all I can say.  Now I just need to wait 6 weeks to see if I passed or failed.

We did not participate in Halloween this year.  I thought for SURE we’d get egged or TP’d.  Thankfully we didn’t!  We had a few parties to go to and I had a hockey game later in the evening so I we weren’t around to hand out candy (boo!).  That’s also the reason I didn’t get Lucy an ADORABLE Halloween Costume.  I used to mock the people who dressed up their dogs, but then I dressed Lucy up as a lion last year.  I’m happily a crazy dog owner.  Don’t judge.

Seriously, does it get any cuter?  And it made Matt, my Mom, & I laugh.  How can you go wrong with that?  Next year folks…next year.
Super funny story.  Saturday, Matt & I were grocery shopping.  We were in the cheese area of the dairy section.  I was on one end getting shredded cheese & Matt was on the other getting ricotta.  As I walked back to the cart, this African American woman behind Matt says to me:
“is that your hunka-hunka burning love?”

And I said “why yes it is”

and she said “mmm-hmmm…i could tell” with a big grin.

It made me giggle he got hit on at the grocery store.  At least I think that was a compliment.  She said it kind of silly & with a smile.
