This weekend my mom was in town.¬† In fact, we just saw her off to the airport ūüôĀ¬† The original plan was she was going to help me organize the new shed & the old shed.¬† But its still in the middle of the backyard….

Instead, we found other things to do.¬† Like hang out & dine out.¬† The most exciting thing we did was revamp an old dresser I bought on craigslist.¬† I had visions…but I didn’t envision it to turn out as amazing as it did.

We started on Friday at Home Depot to pick out an accent color РI reused house paint for the main color.  Then we moved everything outside where it was 70 degrees.

We cleaned & painted & let it dry over night.

Saturday we painted the drawers, distressed, and put the finishing touches on.

Thanks MOM!

www.meadcal.com

It does it all!¬† It allows you to access it on the internet, has apps for all phone types, AND, you can even add your grocery lists (for both to see) AND to do’s.¬† I love it.

….now only if we could get the shed moved from the middle of the yard.

I talked to a good friend from college today, Ben.  It made me think back to my wild & crazy college days along with my wild & crazy before 25 days Рwell, as wild & crazy as an engineering student at a small almost all engineering school can be.  I was telling him about how I sometimes envy my friends that can not only A) stay up past 10:00 PM but B) Can GO OUT after 10:00 PM, have a great night (late), and still function the next day.  This is some of what I told him (never mind my bad punctuation & rambling):

…¬† It made me think of my college days, and kind of made me miss them a bit – not the educational part – of course.¬† I miss the fun¬†– i don’t miss the hangovers.¬† Are you an old man too?¬† What happened???????¬† Remember how much fun we were?¬† Were we fun?¬† Or did I just think we were fun?¬† *sighs*¬† I hate being old and having responsibilities.¬† I told my mom about that last night and she said “i seem to remember someone having a lot of fun” and I said “i know…i’m old and have a J.O.B. now” and she said “it didn’t stop you before”.¬† So what changed?¬†

I was telling my BFF, Tonee about it today too.¬† And I said – I think it started when I started to lose weight.¬† I realized how many hours on the treadmill it would require me to burn off those 10 Coors Lights I drank the night before – and I just don’t have the time/energy/will to do that.¬†¬† Heck – Beer & Pizza is a huge factor in why I needed to lose weight.¬† Who knew?

Then Tonee said “If I weren’t married and didn’t have kids, I’m pretty sure I’d be fairly untamed by now”

Me: are we still cool?  Did we lose our cool along the way?

Tonee: maybe a different kind of cool

Me: domesticated cool?¬† Like – hey, watch me sew this awesome shirt WITHOUT a pattern – bet you can’t do that late night partier!¬† Take That!

I guess with age comes different priorites and different interests.  Good/Bad/Indifferent.  It also makes you appreciate the few & far between nights of acting like a crazy youngster a little bit more.

I’ll take Domesticated Cool.

Adjusting

So, I’ve been on the job for a week now.¬† I’m a little depressed & I’m adjusting.¬†

I no longer get to work half day friday’s, so that’s a bummer, on the contrary, I’m home by 4:30 everyday (used to be 6:00), which is awesome.¬† And I don’t know if I don’t like it because I’m not busy and feel like I could be using this “wasted” time at home, or if I don’t like it because its a job, or I don’t like it becuase I just don’t like it.¬† I think its the first one.¬† I like engineering and have found that days I am busy, it’s more enjoyable.¬†

Today, I got a ray of hope.¬† After speaking with another girl that works here (there are 4 of us total…its a sea of men…I guess I didn’t expect anything less), she said the job starts off slow, and before I know it, I’ll be swamped.¬† It was reassuring.¬†¬†

I’m really focusing on ALL of the positives – not the negatives (annoying gum chewer on the other side of the cube, bad pens, quieter…) – Management is better, I have a lot more responsibility, there are no preconcieved notions of what my abilities are, the people are nice, they think I’m a rockstar engineer (I’m trying to hold up to that), they push me, I’m designing systems I didn’t before, and they are relaxed.

So, I’m not judging or jumping to conclusions.¬† 1 week is not enough time to figure out if this is the right fit for me.¬† I’ll give it more time.

I started my new job on Tuesday.  So far so good.  I do have a complaint Рthe pens suck.  See exhibit A:

And I don’t need anything fancy.¬† My favorite are the clicky ones.¬† I brought some from home.¬† See exhibit B:

I guess the pens stinking can be replaced by a larger cube, nice desk chairs, & nice people.

I’m working downtown, which is a whole new world.¬† I like the hustle & bustle & to see people outside all the time.¬† Getting to work isn’t to terrible.¬† Even though I’m a mile closer to my new job than my old job, it takes me an extra 10 min.¬† I hit a bit of traffic on the way along with driving clear across downtown (stupid stop lights).¬† But I’m lucky enough to have recieved a parking pass so that’s not an issue.¬† With everyday, I get a little bit better with finding my way to/from work (oh…and finding my car in the parking garage…its big).¬† OH!¬† And, like in every building downtown (so it seems), there is a convience store on the ground floor.¬† Can we say “expanding waist line”?¬† At least with a vending machine, the selection is smaller, and 85% of the time there isn’t anything in there I really want.¬† The convience store has everything.¬† Crap.¬† I also no longer get halfday fridays, which depresses me, but I’ll move on.

There seems to be a trend.  5 years ago I started at M-E Engineers on my birthday week.  And this year, I started M.E. Group on my Birthday Week.  Which brings me to a very valid question:

Is it my birthday week?¬† My birthday is on a Monday this year.¬† So is my birthday week the week before (this week)?¬† Or the week of (next week)?¬† Or is it just Monday-Monday & ends on my birthday?¬† I couldn’t figure out the answer, so I extended my birthday week into 2 weeks.¬† Birthday Week is my favorite time of year (close 2nd to Christmas).¬† So far, Matt has gotten me a new napsack & a lunch box.¬†¬† I’m a lucky gal.¬† So spoiled.¬† Both are amazing and¬†I LOVE.¬† Everyone in the world should celebrate their¬†birthday week.

2011 came in with a cold snap here in Denver.¬† We had a wind chill advisory this morning.¬† BRRR its cold.¬† Thankfully, tomorrow will be back in the 40’s.¬† I can deal with that.

We are excited for 2011.¬† 2010 had its ups & downs and aside from our wedding and a few trips, it wasn’t all spectacular.¬† But, the most important part, is through it all, we’ve come out better, so I’ll give 2010 that!

**side note**¬† The Rose Bowl just came on….how does Paula Dean get selected to do the coin toss?

We spent the last week in WI.¬† It was WONDERFUL.¬† Its so much fun to see family and friends.¬† I was even able to visit with my Uncle Harvey who lives in NC.¬† I haven’t seen him in years.¬† I even survived not opening gifts until around 3:00 pm on Christmas.¬† It was hard, but I kept busy.

We didn’t do TOO much, mostly sitting on the couch watching TV.¬† But Tuesday we brought Abby ice skating.¬† Check her out….she has rythm “step, step, glide”.¬† I love her.¬† She informed me she doesn’t want to play hockey like Aunt Catie, she’d rather be a princess ice skater.

On Wednesday, Sarah, B & I went to Beaver Creek Reserve to go snowshoeing.¬† I loved it.¬† But as B said, its easier to do while on the trail.¬† I’m thinking of taking Lucy up tot he mountains sometime this winter & taking her.¬† She’ll love it.¬† Never mind B taping my rear end snowshoeing.¬† Matt just watched the video and said it sounds like sasquatch walking through the woods.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5oXJ5413JIw]

We met Brian R at the 400 Club Wednesday night.¬† Its our once a year meeting place.¬† Its perfect. This year, Matt got challenged by “skinner” (a INCREDIBLY intoxicated man…i mean, can’t stand up, and you get a buzz from his breath when he talks to you) to pushups.¬† Skinner thought he could beat Matt.¬† I told Matt to take it, we could always use an easy $100.¬† But then Skinner took back his bet – he’s broke.¬† Bummer.

Thursday we got a visit from my cousin Amy Jo.¬† She only stayed for a bit, but it was great to see her, Bryce & Caleb.¬† Thursday night the whole family went to Pizza Del Re for an early birthday dinner for me.¬† I love that place.¬† Yum Yum Yum!!¬† Matt tried to be an awesome Uncle & win Abby a toy out of the claw machine, but he ran out of money before he won.¬† I scrounged up a few more quarters and BAM, first try, the purple ball she wanted.¬† Win Aunt Catie.¬† Abby went running back to our seats so excited with her purple ball, she got some cheers from some strangers at another table.¬† I tried to get Gabe a stuffed monkey, but that equaled a big FAIL.¬† Oh well…he’s to young to care…right?¬† After that, we went to see “Little Fockers” with B, Dave, Sarah, & Chuck.¬† It was a good movie, lots of funny parts.

Lucy spent half of the holiday’s at our friend Josh’s.¬† His dad adores her.¬† She spent the rest with our friend Brad.¬† He brought her to his apartment and she had a blast with his dog, Boo (who’s stayed with us for some time, so no stranger to Lucy) and another dog, Cassie (he’s dog watching).¬† They had a blast together.¬† I can tell because Lucy hasn’t left the couch since we got home last night.¬† She’s exhausted.¬† Also, Lucy had her first encounter with a cat.¬† Lucy-0 Cat-1.¬† Brad told us the cat actually was chasing Lucy & hissing at her.¬† Oh Lucy!!!

One thing we were looking forward to when we came home (besides seeing Lucy) was our new shed.¬† We’ve been needing a new shed for storage for a long time coming.¬† And finally…we have one.¬† Good news is, Juan got it up before we got home.¬† Bad news is…its not in the right spot.¬† Who puts a shed here?¬† In the middle of the yard?

Its supposed to be tucked nicely into this corner.

hopefully….he’s not done.¬† Otherwise, I will not be a happy camper.
