I really should write blog posts while running, that’s when I think of everything great, but by the time I get home & am actually able to blog, I forget.

I finally used my birthday & mother’s day money and bought a new sewing machine.  It’s awesome, except it claims to be “jam-less” and I’ve jammed it several times.  Last weekend I made Link a pair of shorts.  I was highly skeptical about the outcome several times along the way, but I’m pleasantly pleased.  They even fit right & didn’t fall apart in the wash.  I was pondering having Matt send Link to daycare with an extra pair on Wednesday, just in case, you know, they fell apart.  Not necessary!!

Another pro to sewing?  I didn’t watch TV once last week. I kind of felt out of it, but it was really nice.

Beginning of July, Matt & I were at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival when I fell in love w/ this woman’s work.  She is able to take old scrap wood & turn it into amazing looking wall decorations.  I thought some of her animals would someday look great in a baby’s room…then I fell over when I saw a piece was over $700.

I thought I could recreate it, but didn’t quite know how.  I went through about 10 different variations, but still nothing I was completely satisfied with.   Fortunately, the process (or a process that makes sense to me) came, and I was able to make my own.

I started by searching craigslist for scrap wood – low & behold, there was an ad for FREE scrap wood from a torn down barn.  JACKPOT!   I acquired quite the collection of wood (more projects?).

Second, I assembled the wood onto a piece of backer board.

I then cleaned the house & took a nap while I waited for the glue to dry.

Finally, I worked some jigsaw magic & came up with this.

I am so happy with how it turned out.  And excited.  Ask my mom.  I was so excited when I called her, I bet she thought I just got my name called to “come on down” on The Price Is Right!

A mismatched matching half bedroom set

April 16th, 2011

About a month ago, I bought this fabulous book shelf from craigslist (oh how I love you CL).  In fact, When I saw the picture on CL, I thought “this is in great shape”…it wasn’t, but it was $10 and i was going to paint it anyways, so who cares?   Right?  (it looks WAY worse […]

I now consider myself a pro at stripping paint.  Don’t mess around with other brands, Jalisco IS.THE.BEST.

So, I’ve been spending whatever free time I’ve had the last month stripping paint.  It’s been a process.  When I started, in a few spots I ran into this stuff which I thought was rotting wood.  It worried me, but it was just in one spot, so I kept going.  Once I started doing the underside of the shelves, I ran into more of it.  Thankfully, it wasn’t rotting wood.  I don’t know exactly what the black, nasty, thick, sticky stuff was, but it was no match for Jalisco.

I was skeptical through the whole process how it would turn out, but now that its done, I’m pleased  Our spare bedroom now has a mismatched matching half bedroom set w/ the dresser I finished a few months ago.

Weekend Revamp

This weekend my mom was in town.  In fact, we just saw her off to the airport 🙁  The original plan was she was going to help me organize the new shed & the old shed.  But its still in the middle of the backyard…. Instead, we found other things to do.  Like hang out […]

This weekend my mom was in town.  In fact, we just saw her off to the airport 🙁  The original plan was she was going to help me organize the new shed & the old shed.  But its still in the middle of the backyard….

Instead, we found other things to do.  Like hang out & dine out.  The most exciting thing we did was revamp an old dresser I bought on craigslist.  I had visions…but I didn’t envision it to turn out as amazing as it did.

We started on Friday at Home Depot to pick out an accent color – I reused house paint for the main color.  Then we moved everything outside where it was 70 degrees.

We cleaned & painted & let it dry over night.

Saturday we painted the drawers, distressed, and put the finishing touches on.

Thanks MOM!

mirror

November 28th, 2010

I finished the mirror today.  It turned out awesome, despite my pictures. Never mind all the crap reflected in the mirror, right now, its the spare bedroom that is also our “catch all” room.  I’m in the process of cleaning/organizing it all.  I promise 🙂  Also, the pictures don’t really do it justice.  The room […]

Never mind all the crap reflected in the mirror, right now, its the spare bedroom that is also our “catch all” room.  I’m in the process of cleaning/organizing it all.  I promise 🙂  Also, the pictures don’t really do it justice.  The room is so dark, the pictures turned out dark, no matter how much I exposed them!  Silly old house.

Thank you West End Salvage in Des Moines, IA for the idea.
